Wakefield Named Sox Special Assignment Instructor

Adding to Boston’s of former players like Pedro Martinez and Jason Varitek, the Red Sox announced today that Tim Wakefield will become Boston’s next Special Assignment Instructor. In keeping with his strong community services ties Wakefield will also be honorary chairman of the Red Sox Foundation.

One would suspect that one of Wake’s first assignments will be working with Triple-A knuckleballer Steven Wright, who the Sox got from Cleveland in exchange for Lars Anderson. With the knuckleball becoming a more legitimate and sophisticated pitch in a staff’s arsenal, sharpening Wright’s skills could prove most beneficial to club long-term.

Over a 19-year career, 16 of them with Boston, Wakefield amassed 200 wins, had a lifetime ERA of 4.41 and was one of Boston’s most beloved players.
