At a snail’s pace, the Boston Red Sox and Mike Napoli are inching toward a deal that Red Sox officials now say will be consummated sometime next week.
ESPN reported today that Napoli and the Sox were working on a one-year deal for an as yet undisclosed salary. Why is Boston working this deal so hard? If David Ortiz and Mauro Gomez were your existing first base possibilities wouldn’t you be working it hard too?
The two parties agreed to a three-year, $39 million deal that fell apart after Napoli’s physical purportedly revealed a problem with his hip.
This has been a painful journey but Boston’s won’t get fooled again attitude in the wake of the Carl Crawford and John Lackey deals is to be commended. How sure is Boston that the deal with happen? They have invited former Cardinals minor leaguer Mark Hamilton a big left-handed hitting first baseman to big-league camp.
And I’ll get on my knees and pray
We don’t get fooled again
Don’t get fooled again
