The Red Sox moved one step further into filling out their 2013 coaching staff today, and they did it in predictable fashion. The hiring of Brian Butterfield as a new third base coach represented the third former Blue Jays’ staff member to join the Red Sox, following John Farrell and Torey Lovullo. Butterfield has worked in the Blue Jays organization in some capacity since 2002, when he was hired as an infield instructor.
As an infield instructor particularly, Butterfield has received great praise from many a former Blue Jay. He is well respected for his coaching talent, and players such as Orlando Hudson and Aaron Hill have stated that they would not be the defensive infielders they are if not for Butterfield’s tutelage. Perhaps he can aid in the defensive development of Jose Iglesias and Will Middlebrooks, and continue his good work in Boston.
