It could not have been a more fitting conclusion to any injury-plagued season of frustration without more damage being dealt to the Red Sox in the final week of the season.

Dustin Pedroia will sit out the remainder of the year after pre-game x-rays Monday revealed that he suffered  an avulsion fracture of his left ring finger sustained while sliding into second base against the Orioles in the eighth inning on Sunday. Pedro Ciriaco started at second base last night in Pedroia’s place.

In a record-setting year of decimating injury Red Sox players have missed a combined 1,485 games on the disabled list.
