Looking to bolster their bullpen in the final two weeks of the season the Pittsburgh Pirates are reportedly (via Boston Globe reporter Nick Cafardo’s Twitter feed) interested in Red Sox relievers. With nearly all other Sox relievers under team control after 2012, Pittsburgh would looking at Vicente Padilla, who is the lone bullpen exception due to hit free agency in 2012. The Pirates active roster currently includes 18 pitchers.
The trade seems unlikely to me. Pittsburgh is 3 games out of a playoff spot and is a long shot to make the postseason since they are chasing the Brewers, Dodgers and Cardinals for one of the two spots.
According to CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam an unnamed MLB executive said that Jacoby Ellsbury‘s chances of re-signing with Boston after 2013 are “zero.”
