Red Sox to Promote Aaron Cook For Bullpen Help

The news broke just as Red Sox fans were hoping.  With the risk of losing pitcher Aaron Cook to his opt-out clause, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the big club plans on promoting Cook to the major-league roster, securing his services.

While no official announcement has been made, Bradford states that a major league source has said the promotion will take place in the next couple of days.

Cook appears to be destined for the bullpen as manager Bobby Valentine said that is how they plan to use the veteran, at least for now.  With the Red Sox five-man rotation somewhat set, Cook will have to prove he can get major leaguers out and hope that he gets a shot to start.  Clay Buchholz has been struggling through his first five starts this season and that has prompted the speculation of sending him to AAA or the possibility of going to a six-man rotation.

Bradford also writes that multiple clubs had inquired on Cook and were interested in trading for him before the Red Sox admitted they would be promoting him.

The right decision was made, now the management team needs to figure out how to best utilize this guy.  If that means demoting Clay Buchholz for the time being, so be it.
