As expected, the Red Sox sent their struggling reliever Mark Melancon to Triple-A Pawtucket today. Likely with hopes that he can work back to form in a less pressure packed situation.
Melancon allowed 6 ER–3 HR–without recording an out against the Rangers’ relentless offense in the eighth inning of last nights game before finally being pulled in what was a historically bad relief appearance.
According to ESPNBoston.com Bobby V said Melancon was on board with the demotion, saying this–
He walked into the office and he said, when do I leave? How soon can I get on the mound again?
In his place, the Red Sox have elected to call on RHP Junichi Tazawa from the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Tazawa made a strong impression this spring but Bobby V thought he could use some more time in the minors to get his feel back after having Tommy John surgery in 2010. If there’s ever a chance for Tazawa to make his presence in the majors felt it’s now.
