Red Sox Lose Exposito to the Orioles

When the Red Sox designated both pitcher Michael Bowden and catcher Luis Exposito for assignment, they had to have known there was an above average chance that they would risk losing both players.  Today that has come true, at least on one of the players when the Baltimore Orioles claimed catcher Luis Exposito off waivers from Boston, keeping the 25-year old in the AL East.

Last season saw Exposito at the AAA Pawtucket level where he posted an offensive line of .242/.298/.367 line in 359 plate appearances while throwing out 33% of stolen base attempts.  He became expendable to the Red Sox when Ryan Lavarnway has shown promise behind the plate and prospect Blake Swihart currently in single A ball and ready to climb the levels.

No reports have yet been released on whether Michael Bowden has been claimed.  Most experts are expecting the young pitcher to find a new home with another club and will likely land in the bullpen at the major league level.

Not too surprised that Exposito got DFA’d. He was definitely expendable because of the forementioned facts about Lavarnway and Swihart surpassing him as prospects. Dan Butler has also made great strides and will likely provide the same stuff Exposito would have.

Exposito definitely has a better chance at eventually cracking the big club as a backup catcher with the O’s.

I’d hate to see Bowden go though it’s probably likely since he has good stuff. I’m betting the Cubs take him.

@JLFCASH after Melancon’s performance so far this season the club needs to desperately hold on to Bowden and do something with Melancon.

@Derek Stykalo There’s definitely something wrong with Melancon. But unless he has a serious injury (the 60 Day DL type), he’ll likely be optioned to Pawtucket to work out whatever mechanical kinks he has and to regain his confidence. Otherwise they’ll have to 60 Day DL somebody else if they want to keep Bowden.
