Some Notes From Saturdays Red Sox Games

facebooktwitterreddit

The biggest note from Saturdays games was Alfredo Aceves giving up 9 Earned Runs in just three innings against the Phillies. Nothing went right for Aceves in the game, he gave up 10 Hits and 3 HR’s along with a wild pitch and a walk. You have to wonder what this does for the fifth starter competition. As good as Aceves can be, I can remember games like this last season where he lost control. Anyone else remember the “soaked hat” games?

On that same note, Felix Doubront was impressive in his start against the Miami Marlins. The left went six innings allowing just a run (6IP,5H,1ER,1BB,2K) in the outing, lowering his ERA this spring to 2.70.

At this point, Doubront looks like the clear favorite to win the fifth starting job with the fourth spot still undecided.

Notes From Red Sox-Marlins:

–The Red Sox pulled away with a win in this one on the strength of Felix Doubront’s impressive outing. Final Score: 4-1

Jose Iglesias went 0-3 in the game, lowering his BA this spring to .174.

Pedro Ciriaco was 2 for 3 in the game. His spring average is .441. I don’t know if he will ever fit into the Sox plans but he’s sure made quite an impression this spring.

–With a 2 for 3 performance, Ryan Lavarnway‘s BA is .429 this spring. (12-28)

Doug Mathis, Clayton Mortenson and Justin Thomas combined for three scoreless innings to close out the game.

Notes From Red Sox-Phillies:

–The Phillies rode on the back of Alfredo Aceves’ miserable performance to a 10-5 win over the Red Sox.

Nick Punto was 3 for 4 out of the DH spot in the lineup, raising his spring BA to .280

Mike Aviles was 2 for 3 in the game raising his spring BA to .293

Jacoby Ellsbury drove in a pair with a triple in the second inning.

As Spring Training winds down, performances are getting more and more critical. The next two weeks will be critical to the Red Sox season so stay tuned in at BoSox Injection!
