Doubront Shines in Red Sox 1-0 Victory Over Yankees

The Red Sox visited George Steinbrenner Field today to take on the Yankees for the first time this spring. The matchup today was the first in a chapter that promises to be as action packed as any in recent memory. The reason is simple, the 2012 Red Sox have a point to prove and there’s no better team to prove it against than the Yankees. It should be an interesting season but lets get to the recap for this one.

The biggest story for the Red Sox in this one was Felix Doubront. With one last starting job up for grabs, the young lefty made a strong case for himself in this one. After a sub-par performance in his last trip to the mound, Doubront rebounded nicely tonight. His final line- 4 IP, 2H, 0R, 1 Walk, and 3 K’s, throwing 75 pitches (49 Strikes). If Doubront can build off of this performance he may force Bobby Valentine into giving him a shot come April. Only time will tell but tonights game surely didnt hurt.

The Yankees also got a strong outing from their young starting pitcher. Ivan Nova dueled Felix Doubront in the early innings until both were replaced in the fifth. Nova’s solid performance comes after giving up seven runs in 4 2/3 Innings in his last two spring starts. Obviously a good sign for the Yankees that their former 16 game winner as a Rookie could be heating up.

Offense was hard to come by in this one with the only run coming after Pedro Ciriaco singled and was allowed to score on two errors in the ninth inning.

Other notes from Tuesdays game: Junichi Tazawa pitched the ninth inning, striking out the side and allowing just a single.

Mariano Rivera pitched an inning in relief of Ivan Nova getting the first two outs before Mark Teixeira made an error. Rivera struck out the next batter, Alex Hassan to get out of the inning.

Injury News for the Red Sox:

Ryan Sweeney was reportedly stiff today and told Bobby Valentine that he would let him know when he was feeling better.

Bobby Valentine said before the game that Jose Iglesias was feeling good and thinks with another treatment he will be ready to go.

Andrew Miller threw in the bullpen today without any pain. He is scheduled to pitch on Friday.

Thats the recap for this one, another day closer to regular season baseball. Stay tuned for an exciting season!
