Is it panic?  Or is it self realization that the Red Sox need to explore the real possibility of signing either Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson to improve their starting rotation.  Either way, the Red Sox, namely Ben Cherington has been busy today and after we heard an offer to Roy Oswalt was made, we now learn that an offer has been presented for free-agent Edwin Jackson.

Jim Bowden of ESPN via Twitter broke the news and he says the Red Sox prefer Jackson to Oswalt, providing the years and financials make sense for the team.  Bowden reports that the Red Sox and the Jackson party are currently in talks.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported that Jackson would possibly consider a one-year deal to prove he’s healthy enough that would garner a long-term contract next off season.  The 28-year old is considered a work horse, having tallied over 199 innings in each of his last three seasons.  With both John Lackey and Tim Wakefield out of the picture, the Sox need a pitcher who can eat some of those lost innings and Jackson would provide exactly that.

The big concern with Jackson is his consistency on the mound as evidenced by his inability to remain with one team for too long.  In nine seasons Jackson has donned six different uniforms, the most recent in St. Louis where he won a World Series with the Cardinals last year.
