It’s Only Spring Training
By Editorial Staff
Just keep saying to yourself, “Its only spring training…Its only spring training…It’s only spring training.” You could also use the words from Allen Iverson, “Hey I hear you, it’s funny to me too, hey it’s strange to me too but we’re talking about practice man, we’re not even talking about the game, when it actually matters, we’re talking about practice … How the hell can I make my teammates better by practicing?” Otherwise, you’re going to drive yourself crazy about how bad these Sox look right now.
With the exception of Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia, all the regular starters are batting .250 or lower, with Adrian Gonzalez belting a whopping .143. The pitching has been inconsistent too. The starters have shown moments of brilliance one minute and look terrible the next. They need to avoid the one bad inning. Daniel Bard hasn’t looked the same, while Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon have looked horrible. The other day the bullpen let up 10 runs in one inning to the St. Louis Cardinals. But, it is only practice, right?
The last two games were perfect opportunities to show everyone what this team was made of. Instead, they were completely shutdown. First by Philadelphia Phillies ace, Roy Halladay, followed by David Price, Tampa Bay Ray’s ace, the next. If we are going to be the best then we need to beat the best. Not only did we not beat the best, we were completely over matched.
On paper this team has already won the World Series. I think it is time to let the other teams in on our little secret. The “Real” games start next week. No need to press the panic button yet. For we all know, “it’s only practice,” right?
