Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury were the stars of the show on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Lester threw 2.2 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on just 2 hits with 4 K’s. It was an important start for the young lefty, because he was coming off a terrible performance in which he threw 1 inning, allowed 4 ER’s and 2 BB’s a few days ago. The problems began for the Red Sox when Lester was taken out of the game.
RHP Adam Mills entered the game with 2 outs in the 3rd inning and just exploded. He allowed 6 ER’s on 7 hits in just 1 inning of work. So far this Spring Mills has been horrible, allowing 9 ER’s on 12 hits in 3 total innings. On a positive note, the Red Sox offense was able to put up 6 runs on 12 hits, but could not overcome the Mills disaster, losing 8-6.
Ellsbury was the star of the show on offense, hitting 2 HR’s in the 3rd and 4th innings, which besides Ortiz’s blast against the Northeastern, were the 1st 2 HR’s for a Red Sox regular this Spring. If Ellsbury can maintain a high on-base percentage and add a little power to his game, he could be a force in 2010.
The Sox play again on Thursday at 1:10pm against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie.
