Boof to the Rescue…Or Not

Winter meetings end, the fun begins for the Sox. After announcing a near final Mike Lowell trade, they now have reportedly acquired SP Boof Bonser. This is a safety-net pick-up for the Sox because it is for a player to be named later at either the A or AA level and some cash. It is a risky move because he had surgery to repair tears in his labrum and rotator cuff in February and missed all of 2009, but he is 28 and has the potential to be a long reliever or a spot starter as needed. Bonser has spent the few years he has been in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins and has struggled with a career ERA over 5. Boof has also been struggling with some weight fluctuation issues throughout his career and has not reached his potential yet, so maybe a change of scenery will help his focus. Don’t expect much from Boof, but we said the same thing about Mike Lowell a few years ago.
