Sox & Rays – It’s Do or Die Time for Both Clubs!

Tonight the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays open up a VERY big series down in Florida.  A series that has a lot on the line for both teams.  As the Red Sox who are 6 1/2 back in the AL East, currently hold a five game lead over the Rays in the AL Wild Card race.  As it’s do or die time for both these clubs!  Since at this point in the season with just about a month of baseball left.  It’s looking like the only way either of these two teams will be seeing action in October, in from the Wild Card.

For the Rays this series with Boston, basically holds their only chance of making the postseason.  As the Rays are 10 back of the NY Yankees in the East, with time running out.  So they can basically forget winning the East for this year.  What the Rays need to focus on is making their move and trying to overtake the Sox, in the wild card.  They need to win this series, and I’m not talking about 2 out of 3.  They need to sweep Boston, as a sweep would move them to within 2 games of the Red Sox.

If they were able to sweep the Sox in this series, it makes next weekend’s series in Boston, much more important.  Since so much can and generally does happen, in the world of MLB.  That by the time the Rays and Sox meet at Fenway Park on September 11th through the 13th, it could be a whole new ballgame for either team.  As the Rays could just find themselves sitting in the drivers seat, in regards to the AL Wild Card, come mid September.

As far as the Red Sox are concerned they need to win this series if not sweep, for one reason and one reason only.  To prove that they can beat the teams, they’llmost likely be facing come October.  Since the Red Sox have had their share of problems all season long beating the elite teams.  The top teams who are the leading contenders in the American League.  Like the Angels, Rays, Rangers, Tigers, and over the last month or so that list would now include the Yankees.

Boston is a combined record of 8 and 20 agaisnt the Angels, Rangers and the Rays, so far on the season.  Making things worse for them, is the fact they still have to 9 games to go with these teams.  As they have 3 with the Angels and 6 with the Rays.  The good news is that verse the Yankees and Tigers, the Sox are 15-7 this year.

Since winning these games, and knowing that going into the postseason, you can beat these teams is a great thing.  Especially if the Sox and the fans of Red Sox Nation, would like to see them still be playing, come late October and early November in the World Series.  It’s time to let the best month of baseball begin this evening, with the Sox & Rays.  Let’s see which of these two teams wants the postseason more!

Jim,

Boston if they make the playoffs could face any of those 5 teams listed. It could be the Angels, Rays, Rangers, Tigers or the Yankees. They still might take the AL East, and force the Rangers/Yanks/Rays into the wild card slot.

It's never over as anyone who truly follows sports will tell you. They could go into October as the AL East champs or the AL Wild Card team. It doesn't really matter to me as LONG as they make the play-offs.

If you read the article correctly, I never said the Sox play the Rangers again this season. Just mentioned that they have a horrible record verse them and the Angels & Rays. While they still have 9 games (well 8 now) left with the Rays and Angels.

I've learned that you can't please everyone and you do forget to include a stat here and there at times. No one's perfect, I know I'm not. Are you Jim? Which is why I've gone back and posted the Sox record verse the Yanks and Tigers into the article.

Enjoy,
Matt

Dan;

If this was two years I wouldn't have any concerns playing the Rays (the Devil Rays back then). But over the last two seasons it seems that Tampa has had our number. Especially playing at the "Little Shop of Horrors" that they call Tropicana Field.

I do love the pitching match-ups they have in the series, it favors Boston, especially if the old Beckett returns for Boston in Game 2.

As far as youkilis is concered it was just bad timing. I don't have a problem with what he said, since he does have a valid point. We can and will turn on you quickly in Boston. It's the passion and love for the sports and the teams that we have. But then again playing in Boston for any of our sports teams puts you on the radar of every Tom, Dick and Harry. It's a plus at times and then it's a real killer at other times.

Athletes can either deal with it and play or move on and whine about it later. Either way for the money these guys make, I think they just need to suck it up and focus on what's best.... winning championships!

I had a chance to check your site out, it's good I like it. I'll plan on stopping by more often and maybe we can do a link exchange if your interested. Just let me know what you think....

Thanks,
Matt

This is poor analysis IMO. Red Sox has 2-4 against Angels. That's only team Boston is likely face in October since only one of Red Sox, Ray and Rangers will be wild card team.

Also, Red Sox has poor record against Rangers, but they don't face Rangers anymore. So only 7-12 against Rays and Angels matter. Also, authors conveniently leave out Tigers and Yankees which Red Sox has winning record against.

It is very important serie for sure, but the argument for important is very poor.

I'm not all that concerned with this series. The pitching is in the Sox favor and barring a sweep, the Sox will still be comfortably ahead.

Nice blog by the way. What were your thoughts on the whole Youkilis thing last week? I wrote about it on my blog today... http://www.danstake.com/2009/09/kevin-youkilis-big...
